What Personal Data We Collect and Why We Collect It

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comment form, as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help detect spam.

An anonymized string (hash) created from your email address may be sent to the Gravatar service to check if you use it. The Gravatar service’s privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture becomes publicly visible in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Website visitors can download and extract location data from images.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you can choose to save your name, email, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so you don’t have to fill in your details again for another comment. These cookies last one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to check if your browser accepts cookies. It contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we set cookies to save your login info and screen display preferences. Login cookies last two days; screen option cookies last one year. Selecting “Remember Me” keeps you logged in for two weeks. Logging out removes login cookies.

If you edit or publish an article, a cookie is saved in your browser. It contains no personal data and simply records the post ID of the article. It expires after one day.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves just as if the visitor had visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

How Long We Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This helps us recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Your Data Rights

If you have an account or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you’ve provided to us. You can also request the erasure of your personal data. This does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where We Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
